Barking dogs

In the US, people like to speak up. Let me rephrase it, it seems people have the absolute need to speak up. Sure enough, the other meaning of the word “dumb”, is “lacking intelligence”. So those who don’t talk are stupid. We better talk! A lot!!!

This phenomenon is interesting to me. I come from a culture that believes sort of the opposite. There’s a Japanese proverb “make inu hodo yoku hoeru” – when translated literally, means “the weaker the dog, the more they bark”. It means the more you have to justify yourself, the more you are going to talk, meaning you are weak. You know those tiny decorative dogs – like pomeranians, terriers, poodles? These are always the ones that bark so much, to every little thing.. way too much. They are quite annoying. I have some of these in my building. However, bigger, or stronger dogs, be it German shepherds, or Siberian huskies.. they don’t bark as much.

Personally, I like doberman. I’d much rather a doberman than a pomeranian. How about you? But wait, I’m more of a cat person.
